Now in its 9th year, the Garden Party has become a local tradition, drawing gardeners, farmers, artists, designers, homeowners, treehuggers and families from across the region. It marks the return of spring and celebrates the start of the gardening season. Each winter, the nonprofit collects donations of gently-used and surplus garden and landscaping equipment, then makes the items available to the public during the event for 30 – 70 percent below retail prices.
It’s a bit like Black Friday for gardeners! The warehouse opens at 9 a.m., but shoppers line up even earlier, eager to dig through piles of gently-used gardening tools, outdoor furniture, bricks, and planters. The first folks in line can win prizes, but late risers should not worry – the sales floor will be restocked throughout the day.
The free festival also includes gardening and sustainability experts; vendors offering seeds, seedlings, and other homemade garden goodies; and workshops on topics like composting, household plants, and herbs. There is entertainment for all ages, including a face-painter and magician, garden-themed art from the Capitol Hill Art League, live music from Oh He Dead and Vico Cycle, and local food from Shortcake Bakery and theCounty Manners food truck.
There will be prizes for the most stylish people and pets, so attendees are encouraged to wear seersucker suits, fancy hats, frilly dresses, and other garden party finery.
The Garden Party is Community Forklift’s biggest fundraiser each year. Proceeds from the sale support their work to create green jobs, reduce waste, educate the public about reuse, and provide free home improvement supplies to nonprofits and neighbors in need.
