Kane Show

Meet the Kane Show

Morning rush hour in the Washington region can trigger emotions ranging from tedium to despair, but thankfully, the morning team at The Kane Show on HOT 99.5 FM is there every weekday to help us get to work with a smile.

From the War of the Roses segments that take a humorous look at relationship issues, to Intern John’s oddball antics, to the steady rotation of the hottest pop music hits, the show maintains a positive, upbeat energy. Led by Kane, the popular anchor of The Kane Show, the team’s chemistry is undeniable.

“We’re a big family and it’s the sum of our parts that makes the morning team so entertaining,” Kane told On Tap. “I get to play Dad on the show, as I do at home, while trying to maintain potential chaos.  Intern John is always the one who ends up saying what most people are thinking – children and animals trust him.”

“Danni is our den mom who just had her second daughter,” Kane added, referring to the show’s newest member, who is a former Miss Minnesota and reality TV star. “She found her home with us helping to keep John in line.  Rose is your best friend that your brother always had a crush on.  She’s honest and sometimes innocent to a fault. “

And then, of course, there’s Intern John – the heart of the Kane Show, known throughout the DMV for his frequent public appearances, irreverent sense of humor and generous spirit.

“We call Intern John our kaleidoscope,” Kane said. “Just when you think you’ve seen it all, there’s something new and lovable about him.  Philanthropy is a big thing for John, from writing an anti-bullying book, which he reads to elementary kids, and starring his dog Chuy, to emceeing the UMD Color Run, to volunteering his time for the Alliance For Lupus research, John is always out shaking hands and giving ‘free hugs’.”

Kane can hardly believe his luck working with this particular morning crew.

“When you put all those different personalities together, along with a somewhat high-strungproducer like Erick, who was born and raised in Bethesda, fun happens,” he said. “I love working with my best friends.”

While the morning team is known for its great sense of humor, HOT 99.5 FM also stays at the forefront of the hottest trends in pop music. Thanks in part to HOT 99.5 FM’s promotional efforts, Christmas is coming to DC early again this year – at least for the 16,000 music fans lucky enough to snag tickets for the annual Jingle Ball extravaganza at Verizon Center on Dec. 15.

“Every December, the lineup for Hot 99-5’s Jingle Ball brings together the year’s biggest musical acts, this year is no exception,” Kane said. “It really is a veritable who’s who of hit music.  5 Seconds of Summer, Calvin Harris, OneRepublic, Iggy Azalea – that’s just a taste of who will be there.  It’s a non-stop party at the Verizon Center.”

The tour, which kicked off Dec. 2 in Dallas, now spans 12 cities, including New York and Miami. The DC date will also include Demi Lovato, Jason Derulo, Meghan Trainor, Lil Jon, Charli XCX, Jessie J, Kiesza, Rixton, Rita Ora and Shawn Mendes, with special guest host Nick Jonas. Kane said the musical extravaganza is at the vanguard of major live music productions.

“Jingle Ball is unique because of the experience,” Kane said. “It’s sixteen of the hottest artists and it’s non-stop thanks to a rotating stage. As soon as Iggy Azalea is done, Jessie J is ready to go.  Really, every part of Jingle Ball is exciting, including some between act surprises that we get to orchestrate on-stage and on the big screens.”

Unfortunately, tickets to Jingle Ball are sold out. But there is still one way to score a ticket.

“Since tickets are sold out, the only way in is to win,” Kane said. “Make sure you listen to Hot 99.5 and enter online at, this is a party you don’t want to miss!

Sarah, Ty and Mel

Sarah, Ty and Mel on All The Hits 107.3

Sometimes, a morning spent with friends makes for a better day overall. Thankfully for the DMV, the newest on air morning crew: Sarah Fraser, Ty Bentli and Melanie Glazener are willing to wake up with you and keep you company during your morning commute. What you can expect from the show, extreme “real talk” and witty banter without fake radio gimmicks and canned humor. This fresh group of friends plans to get you laughing, while also catching you up on the latest celebrity gossip, trending stories and hit music each morning.

About the Crew

Sarah: A veteran radio personality that’s been in the DC market for 6 years on HOT 99.5, but has now joined the Sarah, Ty, and Mel team on DC’s 107.3. You’ll hear Sarah talking about the most clickable/trending online topics and stories every morning at the top of every hour with her segment “The Click.”  What she’s excited about – doing a smart show that highlights strong women.

Ty: Self-professed adrenaline junkie who just moved his family from New York City to DC.  Ty suffers from a bit of a Netflixtion (he watches a lot of Netflix), eats a lot of peanut butter and is anxiously awaiting snowboarding season. #Sexy #NoEvidenceToSupportThat

Mel: A 26 year-old fashionista that just moved to the DMV from Tampa, FL. Mel’s voice is familiar to the DC market as well, since she too was on HOT 99.5 with Sarah. She’s excited to not only be living in the DMV, but also about offering listeners a real choice in what they listen to during their morning commute. She’ll give you the most up-to-the-minute celebrity gossip in her segment “The Rundown” at 20 past the hour, every hour on STM.

In a recent interview…

On Tap: Tell us a little about Sarah, Ty & Mel – the talk show and the hosts.
Sarah, Ty & Mel: STM is a real show that is leaving fake radio and phony phone calls behind. Our goal is to prove that real people in the DMV are just as entertaining and engaging as anything you could make up. We are local, interactive, and just a group of friends having fun every morning.

OT: How did you decide the show’s identity?
STM: It was important for us to bring real back into radio. We saw this show as an opportunity to do what we love and this time do it our way, the real way. We want to have honest conversations with our listeners every morning. Think of it as three friends hanging out and the listener is invited to hang with us too! The listener is so important in fact, that we’ve actually deemed them “the fourth member” of Sarah, Ty, and Mel.

OT: You seem to have a “no-holds-barred” approach on air. What is the reason for that?
STM: One of the great things about this team is that we trust the talent, humor and intelligence of each member around us. With that comes a fearlessness toward any topic or content that comes our way. Our brazen approach can be attributed to a desire to test our own limits, and challenge ourselves to grow (together) each morning!

OT: How do you plan to get away from fake radio gimmicks?
STM: This is going to be our biggest challenge. We feel that radio has used fake people and phony phone calls as a crutch for years. Frankly, it’s misleading to the audience and disappointing to our craft. The audience is smart.  We have the privilege of coming into their life every day and we think that people want hosts that are vulnerable, honest and entertaining. We’re going to provide them with original content and get the listener involved in unique ways.

OT: What do you like most about broadcasting to the DMV?
STM: The DMV is a home unlike any other market in this country.  The vibrancy and energy in our area is palpable!   We have the gift of sharing our lives with listeners who are smart and funny, and appreciate the ups and downs of real people. Plus, who doesn’t love a place where you can eat breakfast on the way to the Metro, lunch at a food truck and have happy hour on a rooftop!

The Annual Trivia Guide with over 100 Places to Play

The Reigning Kings District Trivia & Trivia Kings

Welcome to On Tap’s annual Trivia Guide, offering you the best of all things trivia. This year, we noticed a trend: ongoing tournaments and bigger prizes but we also found that these trivia kingpins have something more up their sleeve.

District Trivia

In a conversation with Nick Groves of District Trivia and Austin Krablin and Brian Potter of Comcast SportsNet, new on their docket is a partnership. Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic and District Trivia have partnered up to present their project, the CSN Trivia Challenge, a $5,000 grand prize bar trivia contest. Scheduled as a four-month contest beginning on Nov. 4 the competition will feature weekly games at 12 area locations all leading up to a championship tournament in March.

“This is the single largest tournament out there,” said Groves. Plus, “This contest allows us to complement the action on television with an exciting competition for the bars and their patrons to enjoy” said Krablin.

The cool thing about the CSN Trivia Challenge is it’s open to all participants. Players can join the contest at any point during the regular season or play in individual games. Games will be hosted at designated locations on a consistent weeknight and time, with prizes and standings points awarded weekly.

“We set it up this way because we wanted to create a level playing field,” remarks Grove.

Following the regular season, the leading teams from each location will compete to decide who earns positions in the championship tournament, which will be held March 11 at Penn Social. The winners of the championship tournament will be awarded $5000.

Trivia Kings

Also reigning strong are the Trivia Kings who have a few tricks up their sleeve as well. Already well established and capable of attracting large crowds the kings are currently looking for a new venue to replace their premiere location, Union Jacks in Ballston (closed).

Aside from scouting a new location they are staying keen on the big picture: The Net Trivia Experience – The bar, the specials and the people.

“Our goal is to have the best bar and the best experience in every neighborhood” a Trivia King representative told On Tap.”

Looking ahead, the realization for the Trivia Kings is that trivia has become more than a hobby and in order to stay competitive their vision has to remain focused.

“There are a lot of things we do that nobody else does” and zeroing in on those things (like packing venues) is where the kings are looking. When asked what players can expect in the coming months, Trivia King reps smiled playfully and said,

“We’re working on something big right now – to be continued…”
