The New African Film Festival is presented by AFI, Africa World Now Project and afrikafé, and showcases the vibrancy of African filmmaking from all corners of the continent and across the diaspora. Now in its 15th year, the festival brings the best in contemporary African cinema to the Washington DC area.
Opening with THE BURIAL OF KOJO, the award-winning debut feature by Brooklyn-based Ghanaian musician Blitz the Ambassador, this year’s festival includes 37 films from 22 countries — more than 40% are directed by women and eight are U.S. premieres. Highlights include Oscar®-nominated actor Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Sloan Prize-winning, Malawi-set, true-life tale THE BOY WHO HARNESSED THE WIND, fresh from its Sundance premiere; Ethiopian-Israeli director Aäläm-Wärqe Davidian’s acclaimed Toronto-debuted drama FIG TREE; South Africa’s 2018 Oscar® selection SEW THE WINTER TO MY SKIN, a provocative drama based on the life of apartheid-era folk hero John Kepe; IN SEARCH OF VOODOO, Academy Award®-nominated actor Djimon Hounsou’s myth-busting exploration of a centuries-old spiritual practice and its misrepresentations; Egypt’s 2018 Oscar® selection YOMEDDINE, a heartwarming road movie that won the François Chalais Award at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival; Tribeca-debuted crime drama NIGERIAN PRINCE, starring Chinaza Uche (MOTHER OF GEORGE); and the U.S. premiere of South African filmmaker Sara Blecher’s (AYANDA, OTELO BURNING) groundbreaking multicultural gangster thriller MAYFAIR.
